| Malestroit Malestroit was founded in the 10th century and became an important and prosperous town in the middle ages, famous for it's leather, linen and hemp industries. Set on the banks of the River Oust, this gave the town the advantage of easy transport to export local materials and products. This trade was helped by Napoleon, who ordered the construction of the Nantes-Brest canal. The main square of the town is Place du Bouffay adjacent to the church of St Gilles. Place du Bouffay is very attractive and in summer it is full of tables and chairs from the several cafes and restaurants surrounding the cobbled square. Here, in July and August, there is live music each Friday evening usually with local Breton bands playing. The whole town comes out to enjoy the occasion. The canal is favourite of fishing enthusiasts and it provides a pleasant walk along it's banks. The ruins of the Madeleine Chapel are also worth a visit. Here a truce ending the 100 Years war was signed. |
